Bernie Sanders and Ron DeSantis speak out against data center boom. It's a bad sign for AI industry

In a rare show of bipartisan concern, Senator Bernie Sanders and Governor Ron DeSantis have united in their criticism of the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. Their unexpected alliance highlights growing worries about how this boom could affect electricity costs, grid reliability, and job security across the nation. Sanders, a prominent Democratic Socialist from Vermont, is advocating for a halt on new data center constructions, arguing that the industry must reconsider its pace. "We have to slow this process down," he emphasized in a recent CNN interview. "It's naive to think that tech giants will ensure everyone's well-being. What happens to jobs when automation takes over?" On the other side of the political spectrum, DeSantis has introduced an AI bill of rights which includes provisions allowing local communities to reject data center projects. He expressed concerns at a recent event in Florida, stating, "Our electricity grid can’t handle the demands that these giant data centers will place on it. Do residents really want a massive data center in their community?" His comments reflect apprehensions that the push for AI could clash with the interests of local populations. Both leaders are navigating their political futures; DeSantis is nearing the end of his second term as governor, while Sanders hints that his current term in the Senate may be his last. Despite their differing political ideologies, the two recognize that rising utility costs are becoming a significant issue, as seen in recent elections like the Virginia gubernatorial race, where electricity prices played a crucial role. Forecasts indicate that residential electricity prices will increase by an average of 4% nationwide in 2026, following a 5% rise in 2025. This trend could influence voter opinions in future elections, especially as the impacts of data centers on local economies become more apparent. Experts, including former public utility board counsel Abe Silverman, warn of a looming crisis. He noted that the demand from data centers is straining the nation's largest grid, PJM Interconnection, which could face a shortfall of six gigawatts by 2027—equivalent to the electricity needs of a major city like Philadelphia. "The situation is critical. We could see more frequent blackouts if this trend continues," Silverman cautioned. As data center developments face increasing scrutiny, the PJM watchdog has suggested rejecting new projects that the grid cannot support. Virginia's regulatory body is also mandating that data centers cover a significant portion of the costs for new power infrastructure starting in 2027. In response, developers may resort to constructing their own power plants, but this practice raises ethical concerns about market fairness and reliability. The intersection of AI expansion and community needs is becoming a focal point in American politics, with implications likely to resonate well into the upcoming mid-term elections and beyond. As sentiments shift, both grassroots and political engagement around energy and technology promises to shape future policies and public discourse.
