The startup behind open source tool Polars raises $21M from Accel

Polars, an innovative startup based in Amsterdam, has successfully raised €18 million (approximately $21 million) in a Series A funding round led by Accel, with additional investment from Bain Capital Partners and various angel investors. The company, known for its open-source data processing tool, was founded by Ritchie Vink, who initially created the project as a personal endeavor during the COVID-19 pandemic. Frustrated by the limitations of the widely-used Pandas framework, Vink sought to develop a more efficient query engine using Rust. Now, five years later, Polars has gained significant traction among data scientists and engineering teams, thanks to its superior speed and performance in handling data. This impressive growth has caught the attention of venture capitalists, particularly as Polars has outlined an ambitious roadmap for expanding into a scalable business model. Just two years after its inception, the company launched Polars Cloud earlier this year, a managed data platform that enables users to execute queries on a large scale in the cloud. Accel partner Zhenya Loginov, who spearheaded the funding round, noted the humor in the open-source community regarding Rust's advantages. However, he emphasized that merely rewriting tools in Rust is not a sustainable competitive edge, and that further innovation is crucial. For Vink and his co-founder, Chiel Peters, a former CTO at Xomnia, this means developing additional products such as Polars Cloud and Polars Distributed. The latter is currently in public beta and aims to support extensive data processing tasks involving petabytes of information. The funding will largely be directed toward enhancing Polars Distributed, as the startup seeks to compete directly with Apache Spark, created by the founders of Databricks. In 2023, Polars successfully secured a $4 million seed round led by Bain Capital, primarily targeting market share from Pandas. Despite Pandas remaining open source and lacking a dedicated commercial platform, Polars has achieved over 24 million downloads, with its future growth hinging on the capabilities of Polars Distributed to scale from single machines to managed clusters. Loginov highlighted the substantial market potential in bridging the scalability gap between Pandas and Spark, stating that effective processing of diverse datasets addresses numerous enterprise challenges. Polars claims its core product is already being utilized across sectors such as finance, life sciences, and logistics. With the introduction of Polars Cloud and Polars Distributed, the company is poised for a significant evolution in its business trajectory. For aspiring founders looking to monetize open-source projects, Loginov advises focusing on substantial and pressing problems, as exemplified by Vink's successful journey.
