As Russian drone incursions rattle Europe, Poland and Romania deploy a new defensive system

In response to increasing drone incursions attributed to Russia, Poland and Romania are rolling out a new defense system designed to protect NATO airspace. The American-made Merops system, compact enough to fit in a midsize pickup truck, is engineered to detect and neutralize drones, employing artificial intelligence to operate effectively even when satellite and electronic communications are disrupted. This advanced system will not only be deployed in Poland and Romania but will also be acquired by Denmark, according to NATO officials. This strategic move aims to bolster defenses along NATO's eastern front, creating a well-armed barrier from Norway down to Turkey. The urgency for such technology was underscored by recent events, including a significant drone intrusion into Polish airspace that involved approximately 20 Russian drones, prompting expensive military jets to scramble in response. The Merops system is particularly advantageous due to its cost-effectiveness. Colonel Mark McLellan, assistant chief of staff operations at NATO Allied Land Command, explained that it offers precise detection capabilities, allowing for the targeting and elimination of threats at a fraction of the cost of deploying high-end fighter jets like the F-35. Drones, typically flying at low altitudes, are difficult to detect with conventional radar systems designed for faster missiles. The Merops technology addresses these limitations by effectively engaging drones through direct combat or by relaying data to ground or air forces for interception. Brigadier General Thomas Lowin noted that this system provides commanders with critical time to assess threats before deciding on a course of action. As NATO begins the deployment of the Merops systems along the borders of Poland and Romania, the technology is also seen as pivotal in safeguarding crucial infrastructure, such as airports, and supporting military operations in conflict zones. Despite former Google CEO Eric Schmidt's investment in Merops, both he and the company have opted for a low profile, refraining from public commentary. The recent drone incursions have sparked heightened awareness across Europe, emphasizing the necessity for innovative defenses against evolving threats in modern warfare. With the Merops system being among several advanced technologies under development by European nations, the focus is on creating a robust response to potential drone warfare. In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has served as a significant testing ground for drone technology, NATO is keenly aware of the rapid pace of drone evolution. As nations like Russia ramp up their drone production capabilities, NATO officials stress the importance of staying ahead in this technological race, ensuring preparedness against the shifting landscape of aerial combat.
