Pocket FM gives its writers an AI tool to transform narratives, write cliffhangers, and more

Pocket FM, an Indian audio series platform, is striving to become the go-to destination for audio entertainment, likened to the Netflix of audio. To achieve this ambitious goal, the company is leveraging artificial intelligence to expedite content creation, ensuring that it meets the diverse tastes of its listeners. The startup, which has received backing from Lightspeed, is introducing a set of AI tools designed to assist its writers in enhancing narrative engagement, crafting cliffhangers, and generating more compelling endings. Rohan Nayak, the founder of Pocket FM, emphasized that these innovations aim to significantly reduce the time writers spend on completing their episodes. One of the standout features of these tools is CoPilot, which empowers writers to transform traditional narrative structures into dynamic dialogue. CoPilot also conducts 'beat analysis' to refine writing, tailoring it to specific audio genres. It comes equipped with user-friendly features that allow writers to easily modify their content by shortening or expanding segments, and generating text based on prompts. To create CoPilot, Pocket FM meticulously analyzed vast amounts of data to uncover what captivates audiences within different narrative genres. The tool includes features that enhance character conflict and suggest thrilling episode conclusions. Additionally, AI capabilities extend to recommending background effects for audio production and automatically generating character bios and relationship dynamics, streamlining the creative process. Notably, the platform is also releasing adaptation tools that not only translate scripts but also localize names and phrases to resonate with cultural nuances in various markets. Following a successful trial in Germany, where the tool significantly boosted writer productivity and increased in-app revenue, Pocket FM is poised to replicate this success in new regions. In the United States, audio series enhanced by these new AI tools accounted for 10% of total playtime, driving $7 million in revenue over the past year while slashing production costs significantly. With the capability to launch around 1,000 pilots each month, the company is rapidly scaling its content offerings, with some titles achieving notable success. Looking ahead, Pocket FM aims to develop its own large language model (LLM) by next year, integrating various tools for writing assistance and story context retention. However, the rise of AI in the company has not been without challenges, as it has led to layoffs and concerns about the potential over-reliance on AI among writers. Despite these hurdles, Pocket FM remains committed to maintaining quality through an AI-powered moderation framework that reviews content for originality and compliance with copyright standards. The company believes that even with AI's assistance, stories with solid structures will thrive in the competitive landscape of audio storytelling. As they continue to innovate, the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity will be crucial for the platform's future success.
