Plex’s 200% Lifetime Pass price hike tries forcing users to another subscription

Starting July 1 at 12:01 AM UTC, Plex is significantly increasing the price of its Lifetime Pass from $250 to an eye-watering $750. This represents a threefold jump and applies only to new purchasers, as existing Lifetime Plex Pass holders will not be affected by this change. Originally introduced in 2012 at just $75, the Lifetime Plex Pass allows users to stream from their own Plex Media Server within their network, as well as remotely. The price saw a gradual increase over the years, rising to $150 in 2014 due to sustainability concerns. By March 2025, the cost was set at $250, before the latest announcement. In a communication to customers, Plex acknowledged that it initially offered lifetime passes to cater to users who preferred a one-time payment for reliable software. However, the company has faced challenges in aligning this model with its financial objectives. Plex's management indicated that they have previously considered discontinuing the Lifetime Pass altogether, favoring recurring subscriptions, which they believe are essential for long-term development. The drastic price increase reflects Plex's evolving priorities as it aims for profitability while still recognizing the value of the Lifetime Pass to its community. Interestingly, the company did not announce any changes to its monthly or annual subscription prices, which remain at $70 annually. Plex noted that over the years, the features and benefits associated with the Plex Pass have expanded, justifying the new pricing structure. With this price hike, Plex seems to prefer that users opt for monthly or annual subscriptions rather than a one-time fee. It would take nearly 11 years for a $750 Lifetime Pass to become more cost-effective than paying annually, emphasizing the company's shift towards a subscription-based model.
