Plex adds new social features ahead of a major price hike for its lifetime pass

Plex is evolving beyond its origins as a personal media server, emerging as a comprehensive streaming platform. Recently, the company has introduced a suite of social features designed to enhance user interaction, allowing it to compete with established social networks like Reddit and Letterboxd. One of the highlighted additions is the 'Discussions' forum, enabling users to engage in conversations about their favorite movies and TV shows. This feature aims to carve out a niche for Plex in the community discussion space, challenging Reddit's current dominance. To ensure quality interactions, Plex has developed a moderation system that combines both artificial intelligence and human oversight to manage content effectively. Additionally, Plex has rolled out 'Lists,' enabling users to curate, manage, and share their favorite titles. This feature offers more than just a simple star rating; users can express their opinions through emojis and share visual content. Upcoming enhancements will allow integration of existing lists from other platforms and facilitate reactions and comments on friends' lists, mirroring functionalities found on Letterboxd and IMDb. Another exciting introduction is the 'Match Score,' a predictive feature that assesses how much a user might enjoy a title based on their previous viewing habits. According to Scott Olechowski, co-founder and chief product officer, this feature aims to streamline the discovery process, allowing users to quickly ascertain how closely a title aligns with their tastes, thus reducing the endless scroll. To keep users informed, Plex is also adding 'Alerts' that will notify them about new developments related to their lists, favorite movies, shows, and industry professionals they track. While 'Lists' are already accessible to all Plex users, the 'Discussions' feature is set to debut this month, with additional functionalities rolling out throughout the year. This move towards a more community-focused content discovery experience comes at a time when viewers are increasingly seeking recommendations from trusted sources, including friends and creators. As Olechowski noted, the discovery of new content has become a collective journey, and Plex aims to reflect this trend in its offerings. However, these updates arrive alongside a significant price increase for Plex's Lifetime Plex Pass, which will soar to $749.99 starting July 1. This substantial hike follows last year’s increase from $119.99 to $249.99, raising eyebrows among users. Presently, Plex serves over 42 million active users monthly across more than 180 countries, navigating a competitive landscape where streaming platforms and social media vie for viewer engagement.
