Plex’s crackdown on free remote streaming access starts this week

Plex has begun to implement its updated policies that restrict free remote access to personal media servers. Previously, users could connect to a server owner's media library without any costs, but that practice is changing. Under the revised guidelines announced in March, server owners are now required to hold a Plex Pass subscription, starting at $7 per month, to enable remote access for others. Alternatively, individuals can gain access to a Plex server by purchasing their own Plex Pass or opting for the Remote Watch Pass, a more limited subscription introduced in April for $2 per month. These new rules became effective on April 29. A recent post by a Plex employee on the company's forum, noted by How-To Geek, indicates that the requirement for subscriptions is being rolled out this week, affecting users of Plex's Roku OS app first. The employee also mentioned that this change will extend to all other Plex TV applications, including Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV, along with third-party clients utilizing the API for remote streaming by 2026. Originally launched in 2009 as a Mac adaptation of the Xbox Media Center project, Plex has transitioned into a comprehensive media server and streaming service provider. The enforcement of these new remote access regulations marks a significant shift for the company, which has faced scrutiny from long-time users due to multiple recent changes, including a price increase for Plex Pass, the introduction of a rental service for officially licensed films, and updates to social features and mobile app design.
