In a significant move, Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation 5 consoles, joining Microsoft and Nintendo in adjusting their pricing strategies. Effective tomorrow, the cost of all variants of the PS5 will rise by $50. The new pricing structure will see the PS5 Digital Edition jump from $450 to $500, the standard PS5 increase from $500 to $550, and the PS5 Pro will now retail for $750, up from $700. For potential buyers, it's worth noting that some retailers, including Target and Best Buy, are still offering the old prices at the moment. Historically, however, retailers have sometimes preemptively adjusted prices before official announcements. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony's Global Marketing Vice President, explained the rationale behind this decision, stating, "Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21." Notably, Sony clarified that this price adjustment will not affect the cost of games or accessories, and it solely pertains to consoles sold in the United States. This announcement marks Sony as the last of the major console manufacturers to implement a price hike this year, following Microsoft's earlier increase for Xbox Series S and X consoles in March, and Nintendo's two rounds of price changes for various Switch products earlier this year.
