Plaid, the fintech innovator that bridges financial applications with users' bank accounts for seamless payments and data verification, has confirmed a significant milestone. The company announced it will allow employees to sell a portion of their shares, establishing a valuation of $8 billion. This figure marks a notable 31% increase from the company’s previous valuation of $6.1 billion, achieved last April during a $575 million funding round led by Franklin Templeton. This latest valuation is a reminder of the volatility in the fintech sector, as Plaid's worth still remains approximately 40% lower than its all-time high of $13.4 billion in 2021, a peak driven by an unprecedented surge in fintech investments amidst ultra-low interest rates. The trend of enabling employees to sell shares has become more prevalent among private firms, serving as a strategic tool for employee retention. Recent announcements from other companies illustrate this trend; Stripe recently disclosed plans to allow employees to sell shares at a staggering $159 billion valuation. Other companies like Clay, ElevenLabs, and Linear have also adopted similar strategies. By facilitating these share sales, companies not only assist employees in managing tax obligations associated with vesting restricted stock units (RSUs) but also alleviate the pressure on management to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) before they feel adequately prepared.
