Pixel 10 Pro Fold review: Google’s bet to make foldables sturdy

The latest Pixel 10 Pro Fold from Google may not appear drastically different from its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, at first glance. However, this innovative device marks a significant milestone as the first foldable smartphone to achieve an IP68 rating, addressing long-standing concerns about durability in foldable devices. As the market for foldables expands, users have consistently prioritized durability, especially regarding hinge longevity, screen protection, and resistance to dust and moisture. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold aims to tackle these issues head-on. While it shares a familiar design with last year’s model, several enhancements contribute to its sturdier build. Notably, the introduction of a new gearless hinge offers improved resistance during folding and unfolding, minimizing the gap when closed and effectively reducing the risk of dust and debris infiltrating the device. In practical usage, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has proven to be resilient. Despite being tossed in bags and pockets, it maintained functionality without issues, although it has not been submerged in water. The IP68 rating ensures that it can better withstand dust and water than its predecessor. Under the hood, the phone is powered by the new Tensor G5 processor, which handles daily tasks adequately but has raised some eyebrows regarding its performance in benchmark tests compared to rival processors. Additionally, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold features a larger battery than its predecessor, enhancing its overall longevity. Users will also appreciate the brighter display, which improves visibility in outdoor settings. However, the bezel surrounding the screen is noticeably thicker than what is seen on many current smartphones, including both foldable and standard models. Google has integrated several AI features into the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, including Magic Cue, which provides context-sensitive suggestions based on data from various apps such as Maps and Gmail. Other features include call translation, Gemini Live video view, and a camera coach that assists users in capturing better photos. In terms of camera performance, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold includes a 48-megapixel main sensor, alongside a 10.8-megapixel telephoto sensor with 5x optical zoom and a 10.5-megapixel ultrawide sensor. The selfie camera setup consists of two 10-megapixel sensors for both the cover and inner displays. While the main camera delivers good detail, the performance of the telephoto and ultrawide sensors falls short compared to the standard Pixel 10 Pro, which features a superior 50-megapixel main sensor. Despite the camera's solid performance in well-lit conditions, it struggles in low light, revealing limitations compared to its non-foldable counterpart. Users have noted quirks, such as the camera automatically triggering macro mode even when not close to an object, which may not appeal to all users. Moreover, the absence of the AI Zoom feature that allows for 100x zoom is a disappointment for fans of that functionality. The naming convention of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold may also cause some confusion, as the 'Pro' label typically denotes the top-tier model in a series. While it has some advantages in terms of display size and battery capacity, it lacks certain features found in the Pixel 10 Pro, such as advanced cooling systems and faster charging options. To fully realize the potential of foldable technology, Google must encourage developers to create third-party applications tailored for a foldable experience. Implementing features similar to Samsung’s multi-window capability would significantly enhance multitasking on Pixel foldables. As competitors like Samsung, Oppo, and Honor strive to produce sleek, slim foldables, Google has opted for a more robust and durable design. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold's camera bump is less pronounced than many competitors, allowing it to sit more securely on flat surfaces. While it may not rival the Pixel 10 Pro in terms of camera capabilities, it remains a solid choice for users who prioritize durability and a seamless Google experience in a foldable format. Priced at $1,799, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is positioned $200 lower than Samsung’s ZFold 7 and is often available at a discount. For those seeking an authentic Google experience in a foldable device, this model presents a compelling option.
