Nobel laureate David Baltimore dead at 87

Renowned molecular biologist and former president of Caltech, David Baltimore, has passed away at the age of 87 due to complications from cancer. Baltimore, a Nobel Prize laureate, was recognized in 1975 for his groundbreaking research that challenged the long-held belief that cellular information flowed in a single direction. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, biologist Alice Huang, along with a daughter and a granddaughter. Current Caltech President Thomas F. Rosenbaum expressed profound respect for Baltimore's legacy. He stated, "David Baltimore's contributions as a virologist have transformed biology and medicine, particularly through his insights into immunology, cancer, and AIDS." Born in New York City in 1938, Baltimore demonstrated an early aptitude for academics. Inspired to pursue a career in science while studying mouse genetics at the Jackson Laboratory during high school, he later graduated from Swarthmore College and completed his PhD in biology at Rockefeller University in 1964, focusing on viruses in animal cells. After his studies, he joined the Salk Institute in San Diego and married Huang, moving on to MIT in 1982 where he founded the Whitehead Institute. Baltimore initially concentrated on viruses like polio but shifted his research to retroviruses, leading to his significant discovery of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that allows for the conversion of RNA back into DNA. This pivotal finding revolutionized the understanding of genetic information flow and laid the groundwork for innovative gene therapy techniques to address genetic disorders.
