Pinterest layoffs impact 15% of staff as resources redirected to AI

Pinterest has announced a significant change in its operational strategy, revealing plans to lay off nearly 15% of its workforce. This decision is part of a broader effort to streamline office space and redirect resources toward advancing its artificial intelligence projects. In a recent regulatory filing, the company detailed its intention to complete these layoffs by the end of September. Pinterest emphasized that it aims to focus on roles and teams that are pivotal to accelerating AI integration within the organization. The company is prioritizing the development of AI-driven products and features, reflecting a growing trend among tech firms to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. With approximately 4,666 full-time employees at the close of 2024, this restructuring will impact around 700 team members. The move is in line with the company’s ongoing commitment to enhance user experience through AI technologies. Earlier this year, Pinterest introduced "Pinterest Assistant," an AI-driven tool designed to provide shopping advice and personalized recommendations. Additionally, the company has been exploring the use of AI to create tailored boards for its users. During the last earnings call, CEO Bill Ready highlighted the potential of open-source AI models to optimize costs, reinforcing the company's strategic pivot towards AI. As part of this transition, Pinterest anticipates incurring pre-tax restructuring charges between $35 million and $45 million, underscoring the financial implications of this significant shift.
