During a recent earnings call, Pinterest's CEO, Bill Ready, underscored the significant potential of open-source AI models to help the company manage costs as it broadens its applications of visual AI. As a platform that often serves as the initial stage in consumers' shopping experiences, Pinterest harnesses AI to enhance various features, including tailored recommendations, multimodal search that integrates text and images, targeted advertising, and the newly launched AI-driven Pinterest Assistant for product discovery. Investors raised concerns regarding Pinterest's prospects in agentic commerce—AI systems capable of acting independently on behalf of users—especially amidst the rapidly evolving AI landscape. They were particularly curious about how these developments might influence the company’s profitability and growth. This inquiry has gained urgency in light of the company's third-quarter earnings report, which indicated a forecast for a weaker-than-anticipated holiday shopping season, largely attributed to tariffs impacting the home furnishings sector. Consequently, Pinterest estimates its fourth-quarter revenue will range from $1.31 billion to $1.34 billion, falling short of analysts’ average forecast of $1.34 billion, which led to a significant drop in stock prices of over 21%. Despite these short-term revenue challenges, Ready highlighted strategies for optimizing AI and large language models (LLMs) without substantially raising expenses. He revealed that Pinterest not only employs its proprietary models but also regularly tests top off-the-shelf options against open-source alternatives. Early results have shown that these open-source models deliver comparable performance at a fraction of the cost associated with proprietary solutions. "One of the most exciting developments we're witnessing is the exceptional performance of open-source models tailored for Pinterest's specific visual AI applications," Ready remarked to investors. He expressed confidence in the company's ability to enhance user value while aligning this with monetization strategies and maintaining cost control. Additionally, Ready mentioned Pinterest's explorations into agentic shopping, noting that the platform has already introduced 'push-button' purchasing in collaboration with Amazon. He indicated that the company would observe whether users prefer having AI take the initiative to execute purchases on their behalf. As Pinterest navigates these innovations, the CEO emphasized that the platform's strength lies in guiding users through the shopping journey, a capability they aim to enhance with the AI companion, Pinterest Assistant. This assistant is designed to provide tailored advice based on user preferences inferred from their boards and saved items, as well as insights from similar users. Furthermore, Pinterest is set to launch personalized AI-curated boards that blend expert human curation with AI technologies.
