Why PhysicsWallah believes it can beat OpenAI, Google in India's AI tutor race

PhysicsWallah, the Noida-based edtech company, is gearing up to unveil what it believes will be a transformative leap in education: AI-driven personal tutoring. Set to launch its AI tutor later this year, the company asserts it possesses a unique edge over global giants like OpenAI and Google—its extensive access to millions of Indian students and the behavioral insights they generate daily. Co-founder Prateek Maheshwari shared in a recent interview, "The future of education lies in personalized one-on-one tutoring tailored for every student." He emphasized the company’s commitment to releasing its AI tutor within the year, as generative AI applications such as ChatGPT become integral to students' educational experiences. Maheshwari argues that the key to success in India’s tutoring market will hinge less on the sophistication of the AI technology and more on a deep understanding of student learning behaviors. He stated, "A company that harnesses the most behavioral and Q&A data will create the most effective AI tutor." With over 135 million free learners and approximately 3.5 million daily active users engaging for around two hours, PhysicsWallah claims to generate billions of data points each day. This wealth of data, combined with their academic reach, establishes a formidable barrier against competition, even from industry titans. Maheshwari believes that if another company attempts to replicate this model, it would likely fall short of meeting the specific needs of the Indian education system. Looking ahead, Maheshwari predicts a significant shift away from the recorded-video format that has characterized the early stages of edtech. He pointed to dismal course completion rates for recorded learning—less than 3%—compared to the much higher rates of 60-90% for personalized tutoring. He sees conversational AI as the future of learning, promising enhanced engagement and outcomes. PhysicsWallah's AI tools are already demonstrating remarkable capabilities, having solved over 100 million questions and assessed more than 2 million answer sheets in just one month. However, Maheshwari emphasizes the importance of trust and accuracy in educational AI products. To maintain high standards, the company has implemented a 'human-in-the-loop' system, ensuring that any unsatisfactory responses are escalated to human experts for correction. Despite the drive towards AI, Maheshwari does not foresee teachers being replaced. He believes that the essence of teaching—storytelling—will remain crucial, and that educators will create AI agents reflecting their unique teaching styles. This allows for scalability in personalized tutoring without sacrificing individual approaches. Additionally, Maheshwari noted that students are increasingly open to interacting with AI, viewing it as a non-judgmental companion for inquiries. This acceptance fosters a learning environment where students can freely ask questions, no matter how trivial. On the financial front, PhysicsWallah has reported a significant improvement, with a 76% reduction in net losses and a 51% increase in operational revenue. Maheshwari attributes this turnaround primarily to core business growth rather than AI products alone. The company is also expanding its physical presence, operating over 350 offline centers, while advocating for a hybrid learning model that combines online and offline formats. Moreover, Maheshwari is optimistic about the ongoing digitization of critical examinations like NEET, which he believes will restore student confidence following past controversies. He supports moving to an online format for major tests to ensure fairness and security, emphasizing that a transparent examination process is essential for the educational ecosystem.
