Adobe has announced a significant upgrade to Photoshop, introducing a suite of AI-driven image editing capabilities powered by its Firefly models. The latest enhancements include an innovative image upscaling tool, advanced object blending, and a refined object removal feature. One standout addition is the Generative Upscale functionality, which can elevate image resolution up to 8 megapixels. This feature is particularly beneficial for revitalizing old photographs, preparing images for high-quality prints, and adapting visual assets across different platforms. Looking ahead, Adobe teased another impressive tool named Project Perfect Blend, slated for release in 2024. This feature aims to seamlessly integrate new objects into existing images by adjusting colors, shadows, and lighting. For instance, if a new sofa is added to a room, this tool will ensure it harmonizes with the surrounding environment. Currently, Adobe has rolled out the Harmonize feature, which allows users to insert objects into a scene, remove their backgrounds, and utilize Firefly models to automatically adjust visual elements for a cohesive look. Additionally, the updated object removal tool has seen improvements in its algorithm, focusing on effectively erasing objects while filling in the background without creating unsightly artifacts. In a recent demonstration, Joel Baer, Adobe’s director of product management for Photoshop, showcased the enhanced object removal in action. Unlike previous iterations, which sometimes resulted in awkward patches, the new system successfully removed an unwanted bowl from a photo, replacing it flawlessly with the original background. Furthermore, Adobe is rolling out minor features to streamline asset management within Photoshop, allowing users to organize their resources more effectively. Users will also have the option to select their preferred Firefly model when utilizing AI features. Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management for Photoshop, highlighted the importance of these updates, stating that they are designed to alleviate common challenges faced by photographers, designers, and content creators. The new capabilities promise to save time, reduce workflow friction, and handle tedious tasks more efficiently. The Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and improved object removal features are currently available in beta for both desktop and web versions of Photoshop, with Harmonize also accessible through an early access program on the new Photoshop iOS app.
