AI is opening doors for philosophy majors

For years, philosophy majors have faced skepticism about their career prospects, often labeled as pursuing degrees that lead to unemployment. However, a significant shift is now occurring, as top AI companies are actively recruiting these graduates to influence the ethical framework of artificial intelligence, often offering lucrative six-figure salaries. As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, the demand for individuals equipped to tackle ethical dilemmas surrounding these systems is rising. Companies are now more aware of the need for guidance on how AI should operate, what values it embodies, and the degree of trust that can be placed in these technologies. Ravin Jesuthasan, a future of work expert, noted the growing trend of hiring philosophers to address these critical issues. Within AI research facilities, a select group of philosophers is already making their mark. Amanda Askell, with a Ph.D. from NYU, serves as Anthropic’s resident philosopher, focusing on training the AI chatbot, Claude, to embody honesty and desirable character traits. Similarly, Iason Gabriel, formerly a professor at Oxford, works at Google DeepMind, concentrating on the ethical implications of AI and ensuring that these systems align with human values. Adding to this trend, Henry Shevlin, a Cambridge University ethicist, is set to join DeepMind in May. Experts in the job market report that while this trend is gaining momentum, it is still in its infancy. Ben Eubanks from Lighthouse Research & Advisory has observed an uptick in discussions regarding the hiring of philosophy graduates in AI-related roles, though he cautions that the actual numbers remain low and largely anecdotal. Firas Sozan, CEO of Harrison Clarke, indicates that the push for these roles is fueled by a growing concern over trust in AI systems and the need for effective governance. The appeal of philosophers in the tech industry is clear. Given that AI systems have displayed harmful behaviors and unpredictable outputs, companies are under pressure to align these technologies with human values. Annette Zimmermann, a philosophy professor, emphasizes that philosophical training equips individuals to handle complex concepts and value-based arguments that are crucial in AI development. While roles focused on safety and ethics have existed in tech for years, their nature is evolving. Unlike past corporate ethicists who served in advisory capacities, philosophers in AI labs are directly shaping the technology itself. They are now tasked with drafting model specifications and behavioral policies that define AI systems. The financial rewards for those entering this field are substantial. Early-career philosophy graduates typically earn around $52,000, while mid-career professionals make about $80,000. However, specialized roles in AI ethics can command salaries ranging from $250,000 to $400,000 due to fierce competition for talent. Positions at companies like Blackbaud and Google DeepMind reflect this trend, with salaries indicating a recognition of the need for ethical oversight in AI. Despite these emerging opportunities, the number of positions remains limited, with estimates suggesting that most companies are hiring fewer than ten individuals in these roles. This growing presence of philosophers in AI has been dubbed the "revenge of the humanities," as the industry increasingly values critical thinking and ethical reasoning in the face of rapid technological advancement. Yet, skepticism remains regarding whether this shift will lead to substantial changes, particularly given the industry's historical challenges with prioritizing ethics over commercialization.
