'Not anytime soon': Microsoft shuts down rumours of Xbox Chief Phil Spencer retiring amid mass layoffs

Microsoft has firmly dismissed rumors regarding Xbox chief Phil Spencer’s potential retirement, amidst significant restructuring within its gaming division. The company released a statement confirming that Spencer, who has been at the helm of Xbox since 2014 and currently holds the position of CEO of Microsoft Gaming, is not stepping away from his role "anytime soon." The clarification follows speculation sparked by a post from the Call of Duty-focused account @TheGhostOfHope, which suggested that Spencer might leave after the launch of the next-generation Xbox, positioning Xbox President Sarah Bond as his successor. In response, Kari Perez, head of Xbox communications, emphasized in a statement to The Verge, "Phil is not retiring anytime soon." Additionally, Microsoft’s communications lead, Frank Shaw, labeled the rumor as unfounded on social media. This speculation arose during a tumultuous period for Microsoft, which announced the elimination of over 9,000 positions—approximately four percent of its workforce. The Xbox division was notably affected, with several internal studios facing layoffs, including King, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Rare, Turn10 Studios, 343 Industries (known for Halo), and Zenimax Online Studios. As part of these layoffs, Microsoft also scrapped the highly anticipated Perfect Dark reboot and closed down The Initiative, the studio responsible for its development. Other casualties included Rare’s Everwild and an unannounced MMO from Zenimax, along with multiple unreleased projects across the Xbox lineup. Phil Spencer, a prominent figure in the gaming sector and a Microsoft employee since 1988, joined the Xbox team in 2001. His tenure has witnessed the introduction of Xbox Game Pass, the launch of various console generations, and significant studio acquisitions by Microsoft. In 2022, he ascended to the role of CEO of Microsoft Gaming. In an internal memo, Spencer acknowledged the difficult timing for these workforce reductions, despite the platform's current successes. He stated, "I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger." He concluded by highlighting that the ongoing success is rooted in tough decisions made in the past, emphasizing the need for strategic choices to ensure future achievements and the importance of prioritizing the most promising opportunities.
