Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer steps down after 38 years with company

Phil Spencer, the Executive Vice President for Gaming at Microsoft, has announced his retirement following an impressive 38-year tenure with the company, including 12 years at the helm of its gaming division. Asha Sharma, who currently leads Microsoft's CoreAI division, has been appointed as his successor, signaling a significant shift in leadership. In a surprising twist, Sarah Bond, the President of Xbox and a frontrunner for Spencer’s position, is also stepping down from her role. Meanwhile, Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Studios, is being elevated to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, where he will collaborate closely with Sharma during this transition. In his farewell message, Spencer revealed that he had discussed his desire to step back with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella last fall, indicating it was time for him to embark on a new chapter. He will remain with Microsoft in an advisory capacity throughout the summer, aiding Sharma as she takes the reins. Starting his journey at Microsoft as an intern in 1988, Spencer climbed the ranks to become a pivotal figure in gaming. He assumed leadership of Xbox in 2014, navigating the brand through challenging times, including the controversial launch of the Xbox One. His recent achievements include overseeing the acquisition of Bethesda Softworks and the ambitious $68.7 billion merger with Activision Blizzard, a process fraught with regulatory hurdles. In her introductory statement, Sharma expressed her commitment to revitalizing Xbox, promising a renewed focus on core fans and players. She emphasized that this commitment would begin with the console that has defined Xbox, while also extending to PC, mobile, and cloud gaming platforms.
