In response to rampant speculation on social media, Perplexity.ai has firmly rejected claims that Airtel users in India are receiving a compromised version of its premium Perplexity Pro service as part of a promotional offer. The controversy ignited after a post on Reddit, which quickly gained traction, alleged that the version available to Airtel subscribers was inferior to both the paid Pro and free tiers of the AI platform. The Reddit post, which garnered significant attention, suggested that the Airtel-linked accounts exhibited slower response times, failed to provide citations, and lacked visual aids like charts, ultimately delivering less informative responses. Dubbed a "Pro-Lite" version by the post’s author, the claims sparked a wave of discussion and concern among users about the nature of the partnership between Perplexity and Airtel. Jesse Dwyer from Perplexity.ai addressed the situation in an interview with Financial Express, categorically labeling the allegations as "absolutely false." He emphasized that he has worked closely with the Airtel team and is well-acquainted with the specifics of their agreement, assuring that Airtel customers access the same version of Perplexity Pro as those who pay for it. "India is very dear to us as a company, and we hope to clarify this misunderstanding for our Indian users," Dwyer stated. He further pointed out that misinformation about Perplexity often circulates online, sometimes exploited by users looking to enhance their influence on platforms like Reddit and X. Perplexity reiterated that Airtel subscribers benefit from the full suite of features associated with the Pro plan, including advanced AI models, file uploads, image generation, and other premium functionalities. The subscription, valued at ₹17,000 annually, is offered to customers at no extra charge as part of Airtel's 5G plan, underscoring its significant value in their partnership with the AI firm. Despite the online rumors, Perplexity maintains that there is no disparity in service quality or features for Airtel customers, who are receiving the complete Pro experience as promised.
