Perplexity has officially introduced its new subscription tier, Perplexity Max, priced at $200 per month, aimed at its most dedicated users. Announced in a blog post on Tuesday, this plan provides unlimited access to the company's innovative spreadsheet and report generation tool, Labs. Subscribers will also enjoy early access to upcoming features, including Perplexity's anticipated AI-driven browser, Comet. Max subscribers will benefit from priority access to Perplexity services utilizing the latest advanced models, including OpenAI’s o3-pro and Claude Opus 4. With this launch, Perplexity joins a growing number of AI providers offering premium subscription tiers, similar to OpenAI's $200 ChatGPT Pro plan, which has been followed by offerings from Google, Anthropic, and Cursor. In addition to the Max plan, Perplexity has diversified its offerings with a consumer Pro plan available for $20 per month and an Enterprise Pro plan priced at $40 per month per user. The company also plans to roll out a high-end Max plan specifically for Enterprise customers in the future. In 2024, Perplexity reported revenues of approximately $34 million, largely stemming from its $20 Pro plan subscriptions, although it faced a cash burn of around $65 million, primarily due to significant expenditures on cloud services and AI model access from OpenAI and Anthropic. Despite these challenges, Perplexity appears to be on an upward trajectory, with an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $80 million as of January. To support its ambitious valuation, which was aimed at $14 billion during late-stage funding talks for $500 million in May, Perplexity will need to significantly enhance its revenue streams. The competition in the AI search market is intensifying, particularly with Google actively promoting its own AI-powered search tool that closely resembles Perplexity’s offerings, and OpenAI integrating search capabilities more deeply into ChatGPT. A critical factor for Perplexity's future success will be its ability to collaborate with AI providers while simultaneously outperforming them in the AI search landscape. The additional revenue from Perplexity Max subscribers could provide a much-needed boost in this competitive arena.
