Perplexity brings its AI browser Comet to Android

Perplexity, an innovative player in the AI search landscape, has officially launched its Comet browser for Android users today. This move follows the browser's initial introduction for desktop platforms back in July, where it showcased its AI-driven search capabilities. The Android version retains much of the functionality found in its desktop counterpart, allowing users to set Perplexity as their default search engine. Users can also interact with the AI assistant by referring to specific tabs when asking questions. Additionally, a voice mode is available for inquiries related to all open tabs, making it easier for users to navigate their browsing experience. One of the standout features of the Comet browser is its ability to conduct research and facilitate shopping on behalf of the user. The assistant offers insights into the actions it takes, enhancing user transparency. Another significant addition is the built-in ad blocker, designed to improve the browsing experience by minimizing interruptions. Looking ahead, Perplexity has plans to roll out new features in the coming weeks. These enhancements will include a conversational agent capable of performing searches across various websites, shortcuts for quick actions, and a fully functional password manager. Earlier this month, the company upgraded its Comet Assistant for desktop, enabling it to handle more complex tasks, such as transferring data from web pages to spreadsheets. Although the Android launch is a significant step, Perplexity also has plans to extend the Comet browser to iOS users soon. The decision to prioritize Android stems from the high demand from various carriers and device manufacturers eager to incorporate Comet into their offerings. However, no official partnership announcements have been made regarding this initiative. Earlier this year, Perplexity did collaborate with Motorola to preload the app on their devices, but it remains unclear if this agreement will extend to the new Comet browser. The AI browser market is highly competitive, with other companies like OpenAI, Opera, and The Browser Company, now under Atlassian, also introducing their AI-driven browsers, primarily for desktop use. Notably, The Browser Company launched Arc Search for mobile last year, but updates have been sparse since then. They have since shifted their focus towards a new browser named Dia, which currently lacks a mobile version. As the landscape of AI-powered browsers evolves, the challenge of competing with established giants like Chrome and Safari remains. However, security experts have raised concerns about potential vulnerabilities in AI agents that could pose risks. In a recent blog post, Perplexity acknowledged these security challenges and emphasized the need for a fundamental reevaluation of security measures in light of AI-driven threats.
