Perplexity AI has unveiled a significant redesign of its iPad application, aimed at catering to the increasing number of professionals and students who rely on their iPads as primary devices. In a recent announcement made on X, CEO Aravind Srinivas highlighted the shift from a mere enlarged mobile interface to a fully native iPad experience, closely resembling the desktop version of the AI-powered search engine. Previously, the Perplexity app for iPad functioned as an expanded version of its iOS counterpart, which led to scaling problems on the larger display and a subpar user experience. The new design seeks to optimize the app for iPadOS, addressing a common frustration among iPad users regarding applications that simply stretch the iPhone interface to fit a bigger screen. With this update, Perplexity now embraces iPadOS multitasking features such as Split View and Slide Over, enabling users to run the app alongside note-taking tools or document editors without disrupting their workflow. The revamped interface incorporates a persistent sidebar for easier navigation, creating a layout that aligns more closely with desktop browsers. Additionally, the app introduces research-oriented features, including improved citation displays and personalized discovery feeds. These enhancements are designed to facilitate easier source verification and topic exploration on the iPad's expansive, high-resolution display. Srinivas emphasized the goal of delivering the "polish and finesse" found in the iOS app while providing an experience akin to desktop usage. The update also aligns with Perplexity’s strategy to attract power users. By enhancing the iPad app as a more robust research tool, the company is seemingly encouraging users to consider its Pro subscription. This tier grants access to advanced AI models, including GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.5, and Gemini 3 Pro, tailored for students and professionals utilizing larger-screen devices like the iPad. This revamp comes during a pivotal period for the startup. Perplexity has recently launched its Comet browser on Android and is actively expanding its Shopping Hub, which features AI-generated product recommendations. Srinivas has also issued a warning to users regarding "fake" versions of the forthcoming Comet browser for iOS, advising them to await an official announcement before downloading any apps. The updated Perplexity app is now available on the Apple App Store. With its native multitasking capabilities, redesigned layout, and enhanced research tools, the company aims to position the iPad version as a more productive and dynamic experience for users on Apple's tablet platform.
