In the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, Perplexity is taking strategic steps to carve out a niche in India, aiming to rival the established leader, OpenAI. This AI startup, known for its search capabilities, is making significant strides in the world's second-largest internet user base, focusing on growth in this vast market. Recently, Perplexity has formed a partnership with Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest telecommunications provider, to offer an exclusive 12-month subscription to its premium service, Perplexity Pro, at no cost for all Airtel customers—an offer valued at $200. This groundbreaking deal, confirmed by Airtel, prevents any other telecom company in India from providing similar access to Perplexity's services. This partnership marks a pivotal move in Perplexity's global expansion strategy, which includes collaborations with over 25 telecom firms worldwide. With other notable agreements with industry giants like SoftBank in Japan and SK Telecom in South Korea, Perplexity is leveraging the massive potential of the Indian market. Recent data indicates that Perplexity is experiencing rapid growth in India. In the second quarter of this year, downloads surged by 600% compared to the previous year, reaching an impressive 2.8 million. In contrast, OpenAI's ChatGPT saw a 587% increase, totaling 46.7 million downloads during the same timeframe. Additionally, the number of monthly active users (MAUs) for Perplexity in India rose by 640%, while ChatGPT's MAUs grew by 350%. Despite the growth, ChatGPT still leads in overall user numbers with 19.8 million MAUs compared to Perplexity's 3.7 million. However, the Indian market remains a focal point for Perplexity as it seeks to establish itself in a region where local AI competition is minimal. Perplexity's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, has also actively pursued expansion in India, previously announcing plans to hire a local executive and committing to invest $1 million into AI initiatives within the country. Furthermore, there are discussions within the company to provide its AI search engine to Indian students to further broaden its reach. While monetizing this growing user base poses a challenge—especially in a market known for its price sensitivity—there are optimistic signs for Perplexity. The competition is fierce; for example, ChatGPT achieved significant revenue milestones, reporting a 731% year-over-year increase in in-app purchases, amounting to $773 million, while Perplexity's revenue grew by 300% to $8 million. To attract investors interested in user growth and market diversification, Perplexity must demonstrate its ability to convert its expanding audience into revenue. With strategic partnerships like the one with Airtel, the startup is well-positioned to increase its subscriber base in the near future, but long-term sustainability will depend on effective monetization strategies. Srinivas was unavailable for comments regarding these developments.
