Perplexity says it's moving away from ads and betting on subscriptions

Perplexity, the San Francisco-based AI search startup, is making a significant pivot towards subscriptions and business sales, emphasizing monetization in its future plans. During a recent roundtable discussion with reporters, company executives revealed that they are steering clear of ad placements in chatbot responses, marking a notable departure from industry trends, especially in contrast to rivals like OpenAI, which is embracing advertising. The company is now increasingly setting its sights on large enterprises and high-profile users, including finance experts, medical professionals, and corporate leaders. Currently, Perplexity has a modest five-member enterprise sales team but intends to expand this team significantly to enhance its market presence. This strategic shift positions Perplexity as a direct competitor to startups such as Glean, which focuses on improving internal data searches using AI. The move comes amidst skepticism from venture capitalists, with some in Silicon Valley expressing doubts about Perplexity’s future prospects after it was identified as a company investors would prefer to bet against in an informal poll at an AI conference last year. In terms of financial strategy, executives mentioned that the company will prioritize revenue generation and retention over traditional metrics like user engagement. Despite this focus, Perplexity will continue to offer free access to its services, albeit with certain rate limits. The company has reported a remarkable 4.7-fold growth in revenue over the past year, generating over $150 million in annual recurring revenue by mid-2023 and reaching $200 million by October. After a period of reduced visibility, Perplexity’s leaders emphasized their commitment to innovation rather than engaging in AI-related controversies. Although the company had previously announced plans to experiment with advertising in 2024, those efforts have stalled following the departure of key advertising personnel. A company executive noted that a primary concern with ads in AI-generated content is user trust. Additionally, Perplexity has rolled out a new product for enterprises aimed at utilizing both internal and external data to create comprehensive research reports and other valuable features, reinforcing its commitment to serving the business sector.
