Perplexity offers more than twice its total valuation to buy Chrome from Google

In light of a significant antitrust ruling against it, Google may soon be compelled to part with one of its most valuable assets: the Chrome browser. The government has proposed that Google divest its leading browser as part of the remedies for its search case, prompting Perplexity to step forward with an astonishing offer of $34.5 billion. However, a crucial question arises: how can Perplexity, which currently has a valuation of around $14 billion, make such a massive offer? The answer lies in the current investment landscape surrounding artificial intelligence. While Perplexity has benefitted from the AI surge—securing nearly $1 billion from investors and leveraging its AI-driven search capabilities in various applications, including its own Comet browser—it doesn't possess the funds necessary to back this bid outright. The $34.5 billion offer, as reported by Reuters, is said to be supported by a coalition of venture capital funds, although details remain scarce. This situation highlights the remarkable flow of capital within the AI sector, allowing even companies that are not flush with cash to pursue high-stakes acquisitions. During the recent remedy trial, various competitors of Google expressed their intentions to acquire Chrome. Notably, an executive from OpenAI indicated a commitment to transforming Chrome into an AI-first platform, should they secure ownership of the browser. This testimony effectively challenged Google's assertion that no one could manage Chrome successfully, adding further intrigue to the unfolding situation.
