Perplexity’s Personal Computer is now available everyone on Mac

Perplexity has officially announced that its innovative Personal Computer application is now accessible to all Mac users. This development, revealed on Thursday, positions the Personal Computer as a robust alternative to OpenClaw and other local AI agents. The Personal Computer serves as an extension of Perplexity’s existing multi-model digital worker, known as Perplexity Computer. Unlike its predecessor, this new application is tailored to operate directly on users' devices, enabling AI agents to interact with local files, applications, and web resources, thereby streamlining personal and multi-step workflows. As Perplexity describes it, the Personal Computer transforms the traditional cloud-centric model by integrating AI capabilities into the device where users conduct most of their work. This shift comes in response to the increasing demand for local AI agents, which have gained popularity for their ability to perform tasks autonomously on behalf of users. While OpenClaw has raised security concerns due to its elevated permissions, the Personal Computer aims to provide a more secure environment for AI-enabled computing. Initially introduced last month, the application was only available to Perplexity Max subscribers through a waitlist system. However, it is now open to all Mac users, allowing anyone to experience its functionalities. The software is designed to seamlessly interact with local files, native Mac applications, and web tools. It boasts the capability to orchestrate various tools and files, utilize over 400 connectors, and leverage personal user context—all within a secure development environment hosted on Perplexity's servers. When paired with Perplexity's AI-enhanced Comet web browser, the Personal Computer can operate web-based tools without requiring direct connections. Ideal for running autonomous agents on always-on devices like the Mac Mini, the Personal Computer can also be accessed remotely via iPhone, allowing users to initiate tasks or approve requests from their mobile devices. Perplexity emphasizes that this application can be utilized for diverse work scenarios, such as managing spreadsheets and documents or consolidating materials from different apps. With the launch of the Personal Computer, Perplexity has announced plans to phase out its older Mac application in the coming weeks to concentrate on enhancing the new offering. For now, the new Mac app is available through direct download and is not listed in the Mac App Store.
