Perplexity AI adds a ‘conversational’ shopping assistant

In response to the recent launch of OpenAI's shopping research feature, Perplexity has introduced an innovative AI shopping assistant that leverages natural language prompts to deliver personalized product recommendations. The company asserts that this conversational search tool is designed to understand users' histories, preferences, and needs, enhancing its recommendations over time. "Our shopping approach reflects our overall philosophy regarding AI assistants across all functionalities we develop, from browsing to email management and task handling," stated Perplexity in a recent blog post. "AI assistants excel when they amplify user capabilities rather than substitute them. They grasp intent, retain preferences, and function as extensions of how users would tackle a task independently." Currently, the new shopping assistant is being rolled out for desktop and web users, with plans to extend its availability to the Perplexity iOS and Android apps in the coming weeks. Initially, the service will be accessible exclusively in the United States. Perplexity's AI aims to surpass traditional algorithms in understanding the unique requirements of shoppers, providing essential specifications and reviews necessary for informed purchasing decisions. Users can engage with the platform using natural language queries instead of specific keywords. For example, if a user inquires, "What’s the best winter jacket if I live in San Francisco and take a ferry to work?", the AI will analyze the user's past interactions to deliver tailored suggestions. Moreover, the AI can maintain context during follow-up questions, ensuring continuity in conversations. When users ask, "What about boots?" the assistant will respond with relevant recommendations based on previous queries. Perplexity emphasized that it remembers past searches and adapts its suggestions to align with users' styles rather than what advertisers prioritize. To streamline transactions, Perplexity has partnered with PayPal, allowing retailers to maintain their role as the merchant of record and ensuring full transparency regarding customer identities. The company also highlighted that users engaging with the personalized shopping experience exhibit significantly higher purchasing intent.
