Periwinkle is making self-hosted social media on Bluesky’s AT Protocol even easier

Berlin-based startup Periwinkle is revolutionizing the way users engage with social media by enabling them to establish accounts on their own domains, free from the constraints of major tech companies. This innovative platform leverages the AT Protocol, the same open-source technology that powers Bluesky, allowing users to fully control their social media experience. With Periwinkle, individuals and organizations can set up social media accounts that reflect their identity, whether on Bluesky or through a tailored site for their community. The company offers domains for purchase and provides users with the capability to store their data—including posts, followers, and profiles—on their own Personal Data Servers (PDS), a key feature of the AT Protocol architecture. Periwinkle's approach simplifies the transition for those who may not be technically inclined or who prefer not to deal with the complexities of server management. Users can rest easy knowing that their servers are continuously updated, backed up, and monitored by Periwinkle, allowing them to focus on creating content rather than maintaining infrastructure. Founder Charles Blumenthal, a former software engineer at McKinsey, emphasizes the importance of user control over social media. He argues that it is problematic for a handful of billionaires to dictate how billions communicate. “Imagine leaving Twitter for a competitor and taking all your followers and content with you—wouldn't you want that?” he stated. The rise of Bluesky, which has amassed over 43 million registered users, illustrates a growing interest in decentralized social media solutions. Blumenthal foresees an expanding market for individuals who desire ownership of their personal data rather than relinquishing it to corporations. Periwinkle offers a range of subscription plans, starting at $4 per month for a Basic Plan that provides support for five handles and 5 GB of storage, along with real-time backups and the choice of hosting in the E.U. or U.S. More advanced plans are available, offering increased storage and additional features for users with specific needs, such as public officials or businesses. A free plan is also accessible for those interested in testing the service. As Periwinkle evolves, the company plans to introduce more functionalities, including automated post deletions and archiving tools. Currently self-funded, Blumenthal is exploring investment opportunities to expand his team and enhance the platform’s offerings.
