The Pentagon's startup arm postpones its internship program, citing 'emergent priorities' in an internal email

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a key entity within the Pentagon aimed at integrating commercial technologies into military operations, has announced a delay in its internship program until spring 2026. This decision was communicated via email to incoming interns in mid-September, as reported by several sources. Carrie Shideler, the DIU's director of human capital, explained in the email that the postponement is due to what she described as "emergent priorities." She emphasized that this is not a cancellation, rather a move to ensure that the internship experience meets the highest standards. A spokesperson for the DIU further clarified that the organization is reallocating its resources to focus on critical initiatives that address the immediate needs of the Department of Defense. Despite multiple attempts for comment from Shideler, no response was received. The email indicated that at least twenty prospective interns were informed of this postponement, with some having received offer letters that proposed a late September start date. Interns in previous years have taken on roles in operational support, engagement, and research, with announcements for the 2024-2025 internship already circulating on platforms like LinkedIn. Established in 2015, the DIU has played a pivotal role in facilitating the military's adoption of innovative technologies, awarding 450 prototype contracts from 2016 through the end of fiscal year 2023. The unit primarily supports startups focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence, drones, logistics, and manufacturing. In recent developments, Doug Beck, the former director of the DIU, stepped down in late August, with Emil Michael, previously Uber's chief business officer, taking over the role as director of the unit.
