In a groundbreaking shift, the Defense Department is redefining national service by targeting tech-savvy individuals from Silicon Valley and college campuses. The newly launched initiative, dubbed the US Tech Force, aims to enlist engineers, data scientists, and other technical professionals for a two-year mission to modernize government systems. Emil Michael, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, discussed this innovative approach during a recent episode of the No Priors podcast. He emphasized the initiative's goal: to encourage recent graduates to view their contributions as a vital form of service to the country, akin to military duty but in a technological capacity. Michael, who previously held a prominent role at Uber, expressed hopes of recruiting thousands of young professionals to embrace this unique opportunity. The Office of Personnel Management, led by Scott Kupor, a former venture capitalist, is spearheading this early-career program in collaboration with various agencies, including the Department of Defense. According to Kupor, salaries for participants are projected to range between $130,000 and $195,000, reflecting the high demand for skilled tech workers. This initiative is part of a broader trend where tech leaders in Silicon Valley have sought to draw students into impactful roles beyond traditional classroom settings. Notable examples include Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, which introduced a dynamic and fast-paced culture to government operations, and Palantir's Meritocracy Fellowship, which encouraged high school students to bypass conventional college paths. Michael also revealed his personal involvement in the recruitment process, dedicating time each week to reach out to his network of investors and technologists. He is actively searching for individuals who are open to dedicating a year to what he describes as some of the most exciting work imaginable in government technology.
