Pentagon wants $54B for drones, more than most nations’ military budgets

In a bold move, the U.S. military has unveiled a staggering $1.5 trillion budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year, emphasizing a groundbreaking commitment to drone warfare and counter-drone technologies. This proposed allocation marks the largest investment of its kind in U.S. history, positioning the nation’s military spending alongside that of some of the world's top defense budgets, surpassing those of countries like Ukraine, South Korea, and Israel. Central to this ambitious proposal is a request for $53.6 billion dedicated to enhancing the production and acquisition of drones, training drone operators, and establishing a robust logistics network to support drone operations. Additionally, the funding aims to expand counter-drone systems to secure more U.S. military installations. This significant funding initiative falls under the auspices of the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group (DAWG), a newly formed organization that received approximately $226 million in the previous fiscal year. Jules Hurst, a senior official at the Pentagon, described the DAWG as a pioneering entity focused on identifying and integrating the most advanced technologies available. "They’re actively engaging with companies to test various systems and provide real-time feedback on integration,” Hurst noted during a Pentagon press briefing on April 21. An additional $20.6 billion is earmarked for acquiring one-way attack drones and advanced drone aircraft through the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, designed to create drones that can operate in tandem with manned fighter jets. This funding will also support defensive measures against small drones and enhance capabilities for the U.S. Navy’s Boeing MQ-25 drone, which is critical for midair refueling of carrier-based fighter jets, thereby extending their operational reach. Remarkably, the drone-related expenditures proposed in this budget rival the entire funding allocated to the U.S. Marine Corps, highlighting the Pentagon's strategic pivot towards unmanned warfare. However, officials have not indicated plans to establish a dedicated military branch for drones akin to the existing Space Force.
