Pentagon boasts of using AI to write reports mandated by Congress

The U.S. Department of Defense is embracing a new approach to managing its extensive annual reporting requirements to Congress, which involve hundreds of reports on a range of national security issues. Pentagon officials are now proudly showcasing their innovative use of generative AI tools to assist in the creation of these reports. During an event at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael emphasized the value of AI-generated reports as a significant advancement for the Department of Defense. He highlighted this initiative as a prime example of how the agency has integrated generative AI technologies, especially since the implementation of Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government on its GenAI.mil platform. Michael articulated the efficiency gained through this technology, stating, "I have to report to Congress every year on this thing. Let me load all the papers onto it and have it draft me a congressional report that would otherwise take 200 hours of staffing time and do it in five hours." Further evidence of this AI application was noted by Jacob Glassman, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology Foundations, during the Box Federal Summit. He mentioned instructing a short-staffed team tasked with a congressional report to utilize GenAI.mil for their needs. Remarkably, when the team returned a week later, they claimed that the AI-generated report was the best they had produced in the last five years. However, the specific report was not disclosed. This innovative shift reflects the Pentagon's commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness in fulfilling its legislative obligations.
