The Pentagon’s Department of War rebrand extends to space

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has authorized the Department of Defense to adopt the title 'Department of War,' a historic reference that dates back to the military's structure before World War II. This executive order allows the Pentagon to utilize the new title as an 'additional secondary title' while pursuing congressional approval for an official name change. The rebranding may be temporary, hinging on Congress's decision, and could be undone by a future administration. However, another intriguing development emerged shortly before the announcement of this name change. The Pentagon revealed an upcoming shift in its organizational structure, including a promotion for Maj. Gen. Gregory Gagnon as he prepares to lead the newly proposed 'US Space Force Combat Forces Command' at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado. Notably, this command does not currently exist within the military's complex hierarchy. After inquiries from Ars, it was clarified that the Space Force is contemplating renaming an existing command—currently known as Space Operations Command—to Combat Forces Command. This existing organization collaborates with US Space Command to provide essential personnel and intelligence for military operations in space. While names alone do not determine success in warfare, a spokesperson for the Space Force emphasized that the proposed title more accurately conveys the command's pivotal role in enhancing combat capabilities in space, ensuring that it is equipped to execute missions assigned by both the Space Force and Space Command.
