As consumers ditch Google for ChatGPT, Peec AI raises $21M to help brands adapt

As consumers increasingly turn to ChatGPT instead of Google for product inquiries, the landscape of product discovery is undergoing a significant transformation. Peec AI, a Berlin-based startup, is capitalizing on this shift. Recently, the company raised $21 million in a Series A funding round, led by the European venture capital firm Singular, just four months after a successful Seed round. CEO Marius Meiners shared that the company’s valuation has more than tripled to over $100 million, although he did not disclose the exact figure. Since its launch, Peec AI has rapidly grown its annual recurring revenue to exceed $4 million, attracting 1,300 clients, including various companies and agencies that utilize the platform to track their brand presence in AI-driven searches. Peec AI offers more than just analytics on visibility and search rankings; it also monitors sentiment and identifies which sources influence search results. This capability enables what the company terms Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), allowing marketing teams to enhance their brand’s visibility in AI search results, akin to traditional SEO methods. The startup's impressive growth, with an influx of approximately 300 new customers each month, is set to continue, bolstered by this latest funding round. The investment will also facilitate expansion plans, including hiring around 40 new employees in the next six months, primarily based in Berlin. Meiners met his co-founders, Tobias Siwonia (now CTO) and Daniel Drabo (CRO), during Antler's Winter 2024 cohort. Peec AI is aware that as the market for GEO tools expands, competition will intensify, with rivals like New York’s Profound and Austria’s OtterlyAI already in the field. To attract talent, the 20-person team is currently promoting itself through large outdoor advertising in Berlin. Additionally, the company has plans to establish a sales office in New York City by the second quarter of next year. As the demand for GEO-focused tools rises and SEO platforms incorporate AI tracking, Peec AI aims to set itself apart with a user-friendly dashboard that evolves alongside the rapidly changing AI search landscape. Unlike typical SEO tools centered on keywords, Peec AI's dashboard focuses on user-defined prompts to enhance search visibility. Clients can monitor up to 25 prompts for €75 per month ($87), or expand to 100 prompts for €169 per month ($196), both offering free trials, while enterprise solutions start at €424 per month ($493). To make its insights actionable, the dashboard provides recommendations that can boost visibility and sentiment. For example, it suggests engaging in discussions on platforms like Reddit to improve search presence for specific queries. Peec AI's analysis reveals that mentions in top-tier media do not necessarily translate to greater visibility compared to articles from lesser-known outlets that better align with user queries. Companies leveraging Peec AI's tools include notable names such as Axel Springer, Chanel, and TUI, as the demand for AI search capabilities grows across various sectors. However, as users also seek assistance for a wide range of inquiries through tools like ChatGPT, Peec AI must navigate the complexities of this environment. To enhance its effectiveness, the startup has acquired raw datasets of user inquiries, which are essential for filtering relevant questions related to brands and products. Meiners emphasized the importance of this proprietary data pipeline as a critical element of Peec AI's potential success, highlighting that the AI value chain encompasses not just models but also the application layer and foundational data, providing fertile ground for European startups like Peec AI to thrive.
