Pebble reboots its thinnest smartwatch with the Pebble Round 2

Pebble is at it again, introducing the Pebble Round 2, a sleek update to its line of smartwatches, shortly after the successful return of the Pebble brand and the launch of an AI-powered smart ring. This latest iteration features a refined round display, enhancing its aesthetic appeal while still being budget-friendly at a price point of $199. Unlike more advanced smartwatches, the Pebble Round 2 focuses on essential health and activity tracking, such as monitoring steps and sleep patterns. However, it lacks advanced features like a heart rate monitor, which positions it more as a casual fitness accessory than a serious sports watch. The benefit of this simplicity is impressive battery longevity, with the device lasting between 10 to 14 days on a single charge. This model pays homage to the original Pebble Time Round, released in 2015, which was touted as the thinnest smartwatch of its time. The new Round 2 retains this sleek profile, measuring just 8.1mm thick compared to its predecessor's 7.5mm. Eric Migicovsky, Pebble's founder, expressed enthusiasm about the Round 2, acknowledging the improvements made since the original, particularly regarding the oversized bezel that limited screen size. The updated design boasts a larger 1.3-inch color e-paper display with a resolution of 260 x 260 pixels at 283 DPI, doubling the pixel density of the original model. The inclusion of a backlight further enhances usability in low-light conditions. Running on the open-source Pebble OS, the Round 2 is equipped with dual microphones for voice commands and messaging responses, though this feature is currently limited to Android due to Apple's restrictions, with iOS support expected in the European market soon. Users can navigate the device effortlessly using side buttons that allow for call management, music controls, and scrolling without needing to glance at the watch. The smartwatch features a robust stainless steel frame and includes an accelerometer and magnetometer, alongside a silicone watch band. Additional leather bands will be available for purchase separately. Customers can choose from three color options, each compatible with different band sizes. The Pebble Round 2 supports thousands of apps and watch faces from the Pebble Appstore, with developers encouraged to update their applications for optimal compatibility with the new rounded display. Future AI functionalities, akin to those found in the recently launched Pebble smart ring, are also in the works for this model. Pre-orders for the Pebble Round 2 will commence on January 2, and shipping is expected to start in May. Customers who previously ordered the Pebble Time 2 will have the option to switch their orders to the Round 2.
