PayPal’s Honey to integrate with ChatGPT and other AIs for shopping assistance

In a significant move to enhance online shopping experiences, PayPal has unveiled new features for its Honey browser extension, aiming to integrate seamlessly with AI chatbots. This announcement, made shortly after a collaboration with Google on agentic commerce, will enable users of AI chatbots to receive tailored product recommendations, competitive pricing, and exclusive deals through the Honey extension. When shoppers pose inquiries related to purchases to their chosen AI chatbot, Honey will showcase links to recommended products, complete with real-time pricing and various merchant options. Moreover, the extension is capable of identifying gaps in the AI's suggestions by bringing forth additional retailers, thereby enriching the consumer's shopping journey. This innovative approach is designed to facilitate price comparisons and ultimately drive sales for merchants by offering personalized promotions. PayPal has indicated that these AI-driven features will initially be compatible with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, marking the beginning of its broader strategy for agentic commerce. This strategy encompasses partnerships and tools that include remote MCP servers and the Agent Toolkit, among others. Interestingly, alongside this development, PayPal is aware that AI providers may also emerge as competitors, as they begin to offer direct product recommendations. In a related note, OpenAI recently announced its own ambitions in the e-commerce space, introducing an agentic shopping system that features an "Instant Checkout" option. While currently focused on Etsy, plans for Shopify integration are on the horizon, indicating a shift in how consumers might approach shopping in the future. These advancements come at a time when Honey has faced scrutiny over allegations of misappropriating funds from influencers, which has resulted in lawsuits. As PayPal rolls out these new AI capabilities, the company aims not only to recover its reputation but to redefine the online shopping landscape.
