PayPal partners with OpenAI to let users pay for their shopping within ChatGPT

PayPal has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with OpenAI, set to revolutionize online shopping by allowing users to make payments directly within ChatGPT starting in 2026. This initiative will utilize the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open-source standard created by OpenAI, enabling merchants to offer their products through AI applications. The integration features OpenAI's “Instant Checkout,” which simplifies the purchasing process by allowing users to confirm their order, shipping, and payment information without leaving the ChatGPT interface. By leveraging PayPal wallets for transactions, customers can benefit from enhanced protection for both buyers and sellers, along with streamlined dispute resolution. Additionally, PayPal will introduce a separate payments API to facilitate card transactions within ChatGPT. Beginning next year, businesses utilizing PayPal services will see their products featured on ChatGPT across a range of categories including apparel, beauty, home improvement, and electronics. Merchants can rest easy knowing that PayPal will manage routing and payment processes seamlessly in the background, eliminating the need for complex integrations. To further empower merchants, the company is launching an agentic commerce suite that allows them to showcase their catalogs within AI platforms, accept payments across various AI applications, and gain insights into consumer behavior. PayPal aims to position itself as a pivotal payment partner in the expanding realm of AI-driven shopping experiences, especially as users increasingly turn to AI for everyday tasks. This partnership is part of PayPal's broader strategy, which includes previous collaborations with AI tools. Earlier this year, the company joined forces with Perplexity to enable checkouts within an AI search platform and announced the adoption of Google’s Agent Payments Protocol for deeper integration with Google products. Alex Chriss, PayPal's president and CEO, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, "Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop. By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases."
