PayPal hires HP’s Enrique Lores as its new CEO

In a significant leadership change, PayPal has announced the appointment of Enrique Lores, formerly of HP, as its new Chief Executive Officer and President. This transition comes as the company seeks to realign its strategic direction with the expectations of its Board of Directors, particularly in light of recent market dynamics. Lores, who has served as the chair of PayPal’s board since July 2024, will be stepping into the role previously held by Alex Chriss. Chriss, who joined PayPal in September 2023 from Intuit, is stepping down after a brief tenure, with Jamie Miller, the company’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, stepping in as interim CEO. This change in leadership coincides with PayPal's recent financial report, which revealed disappointing revenue and profit figures for the fourth quarter. The decline is attributed to a decrease in consumer spending, exacerbated by the ongoing cost of living crisis and a weakening labor market. Investors were caught off guard by the company’s forecast of a drop in full-year profit, as expectations had leaned towards growth. In premarket trading, PayPal’s shares plummeted by approximately 17.9%. Lores, who previously led HP as President and CEO for over six years, emphasized the need for accountability in delivering quarterly results. He stated, “The payments industry is evolving at an unprecedented pace, influenced by emerging technologies, changing regulations, and a competitive landscape, all fueled by the rapid growth of AI. PayPal is at the forefront of this transformation, and I am eager to guide our team in driving innovations that will redefine digital payments and commerce.”
