Patreon, the well-known creator platform, is pushing back against Apple's latest directive requiring all creators to transition to a subscription billing model. This mandate comes with a new deadline of November 1, 2026, impacting a small segment of creators still utilizing Patreon’s older billing systems. The crux of the issue lies in Apple's 2024 announcement regarding subscription billing changes. Under the new rules, Patreon must migrate all creators to Apple’s in-app purchase system by the revised deadline or risk removal from the App Store. This shift is part of Apple's strategy to enforce its commission structure, as some creators were managing their own billing outside of Apple's ecosystem. Although Apple has allowed ample time for this migration, with a previous deadline initially set for November 2025, many creators are now feeling the pressure. They were given the option to increase subscription prices to accommodate Apple’s fees or delay the changes until November 2025 if needed. However, any delay meant that subscriptions could not be offered within the app until compliance with Apple’s in-app purchase system was achieved. Last year, Patreon took advantage of a shift in App Store guidelines following the Epic v. Apple court case, which allowed creators to process web payments through links in the app. This led to the earlier November 2025 deadline being deemed no longer applicable, granting creators extra time to adapt their subscription strategies. However, the recent announcement of the November 2026 deadline has added to the confusion surrounding these changes. Despite agreeing to comply with Apple's decision, Patreon expressed its dissatisfaction with the tech giant's influence over how creators manage their businesses. In a blog post, the company stated, "We strongly disagree with this decision. Creators need consistency and clarity to foster sustainable businesses. Instead, those using legacy billing face yet another abrupt policy change—this marks the third significant alteration from Apple in a mere 18 months." Patreon has proposed various tools and features to facilitate a smoother transition for creators on their own timelines, but these suggestions have consistently been declined by Apple. For those interested, Patreon offers detailed information about the transition plan on its website, along with resources like a benefit eligibility tool, tier repricing options, and flexible payment solutions. Additionally, an annual-only membership option is set to roll out before the November 2026 deadline.
