After concluding over four decades at Intel, Pat Gelsinger is embarking on a new journey focused on aligning artificial intelligence with human values. On Thursday, Gelsinger announced the launch of the Flourishing AI (FAI) benchmark in collaboration with Gloo, a 'faith tech' company he invested in nearly a decade ago. The FAI benchmark aims to evaluate how effectively AI models support a thriving humanity. It draws upon insights from The Global Flourishing Study, a comprehensive survey conducted by Harvard and Baylor University that measures global human well-being. Gloo has identified six fundamental categories from this study: Character and Virtue, Close Social Relationships, Happiness and Life Satisfaction, Meaning and Purpose, Mental and Physical Health, and Financial and Material Stability. Additionally, they have introduced a seventh category, Faith and Spirituality, to specifically assess large language models (LLMs). In a recent discussion with The New Stack, Gelsinger expressed his lifelong commitment to the intersection of technology and faith, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that advancements in AI promote not just technological progress but also the well-being of individuals and communities around the world.
