Viral, raunchy ‘ParkTok’ trend aims to raise awareness of spending cuts to national parks

A recent TikTok phenomenon, known as ParkTok, is capturing attention with its unique blend of eye-catching visuals and cheeky humor. The trend kicks off with playful video snippets, often featuring shirtless men, before transitioning to breathtaking views of America's national parks, like Havasu Falls in Arizona. This movement, originating from unofficial accounts dedicated to various parks, aims to raise awareness about significant threats to public lands amidst budget cuts and environmental policy changes initiated by the Trump administration. With participants engaging in light-hearted banter about nature while promoting their local parks, the videos are both entertaining and informative. "This goes beyond just fun clips," says Kim Tanner, who operates the popular Joshua Tree account. She emphasizes that the visuals not only attract viewers but also subtly educate them about the importance of protecting these natural wonders. ParkTok took shape last fall, initially focused on showcasing the beauty of parks. However, following severe staffing cuts within the National Park Service and the Department of Interior, many creators began to use their platforms for advocacy. The group, which communicates via TikTok, decided to infuse their posts with themes addressing the looming risks of logging and other federal policies that threaten these environments. Some videos have garnered hundreds of thousands of views; one particularly notable post juxtaposes stunning images of Multnomah Falls with suggestive music, while another humorously critiques budget constraints by cutting to an image of the White House. The movement has even caught the attention of Canadian parks, such as Banff National Park, joining in solidarity. Despite their dedication to this cause, Tanner and her peers maintain that their ParkTok activities are hobbies, with plans to donate any future earnings to conservation initiatives. Tanner believes ParkTok has the potential to unite individuals across the political spectrum, as the beauty of national parks can inspire a shared sense of responsibility to protect these vital landscapes.
