In a significant development, French law enforcement, alongside Europol, conducted a search at the Paris office of X, as confirmed by the prosecutor's office on Tuesday. This raid is part of a broader investigation that began in 2025, focusing on allegations of fraudulent data extraction conducted by an organized group utilizing automated data-processing systems. The French cybercrime unit has expanded the scope of this inquiry to include serious allegations such as complicity in the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, violations of privacy, and Holocaust denial. This escalation comes in the wake of mounting criticism directed at X and its owner, Elon Musk, particularly regarding the misuse of its Grok AI technology, which has reportedly been employed to create nonconsensual imagery, including that of child abuse. Elon Musk, who acquired X (formerly known as Twitter) in 2022, along with former CEO Linda Yaccarino, has been summoned for questioning on April 20, as part of the ongoing investigation. Additionally, several unnamed employees from X have also been called to provide testimony during the same timeframe. In a statement, Maylis De Roeck, a spokesperson for the Paris prosecutor's office, emphasized the necessity of ensuring that platform X adheres to French legal standards, given its operational presence within the country. Meanwhile, X and representatives for eMed, where Yaccarino currently serves as CEO, have not responded to inquiries from TechCrunch regarding the matter.
