Parallels Desktop 26 offers a lot to enterprise users, a little to consumers

The latest version of Parallels Desktop has just been released, bringing with it a host of features primarily aimed at enterprise users. This Mac virtual machine software, commonly used to run Windows applications on Mac devices, is now in its 26th iteration. While the update is significant for businesses, everyday users may find it lacking, as it mainly serves to set the stage for the forthcoming macOS launch. With the new version, Parallels has introduced built-in support for Apple's upcoming macOS 26 Tahoe and Microsoft's Windows 11 25H2. Notably, this update addresses compatibility with macOS 26's new restrictions on background processes, particularly enhancing the functionality of Coherence mode. Additionally, it enables Windows virtual machines to effectively monitor the available disk space on the Mac host, helping to mitigate unexpected issues during application installations. However, consumers may notice that there are no substantial new features tailored to their needs in this release. The enhancements are predominantly designed for enterprise environments, including SOC 2 Type II compliance and a deployment guide that facilitates the rollout of individual Windows applications to Mac devices without exposing users to the full virtual machine setup. Furthermore, IT administrators will benefit from improved centralized controls within the Parallels Desktop Enterprise Management Portal, allowing them to manage USB access and network configurations for multiple users simultaneously. Despite these advancements, it's important to note that some features, like the centralized control options, are still in development and are labeled as "coming soon" by the Parallels team. Overall, this year's update is relatively modest, focusing more on maintaining compatibility with Apple's evolving macOS than on introducing groundbreaking new features.
