Before Elon Musk's takeover changed everything, Parag Agrawal had a leadership role model in mind for Twitter — here's who inspired him

Former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal has disclosed that his leadership approach was significantly influenced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella prior to Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform. In a recent interview, Agrawal expressed admiration for Nadella’s successful transformation of Microsoft, which he viewed as a blueprint for revitalizing Twitter’s business model, culture, and product offerings after succeeding Jack Dorsey. Agrawal stated, "When I took the job at Twitter, I was really inspired by Satya, and I referred to him as a founder or a re-founder, depending on how you see it." This reflection highlights how taking on the CEO role prompted him to contemplate Twitter’s future and how it could distinguish itself in a crowded tech landscape. He emphasized that the transition into the CEO position was pivotal, forcing him to envision the company's evolution under his guidance. "I had to figure out what this company was going to become with me and how it would be different. The inspiration I drew from someone who completely transformed a business and its culture was from Satya, and I aspired to embody that founder-like mentality at that moment," Agrawal explained. Although not one of Twitter's original founders, Agrawal ascended through the ranks to become CEO in 2021, having previously served as the chief technology officer. He also articulated that the essence of entrepreneurship extends beyond merely launching a startup, stating, "Being a founder is a state of mind." Additionally, Agrawal unveiled some initiatives he aimed to implement at Twitter before the company was taken over by Musk in 2022. When asked about ambitious plans akin to those Nadella executed at Microsoft, Agrawal shared that there were several significant projects in the pipeline, including enhancements to content moderation and the platform’s recommendation algorithms. He noted that under his leadership, Twitter had already begun supporting the decentralized social media project Bluesky. Furthermore, he mentioned initiatives like Project Saturn and Birdwatch, stating, "There were innovative ideas to explore. For instance, 'Birdwatch', or community notes for moderation, was something I was excited about. We had a project called Saturn that aimed to overhaul the content moderation system, as well as concepts to transform our recommendation algorithms."
