Palo Alto shares sink 8%, CEO defends cybersecurity's position as AI hits software stocks

Palo Alto Networks has seen its shares decline by 8% following the release of its fiscal second-quarter earnings, despite exceeding Wall Street's expectations. CEO Nikesh Arora took to an earnings call to address the recent turbulence in software stocks, particularly the perception of artificial intelligence as a potential threat to cybersecurity. During the call, Arora expressed his confusion regarding the market's view, stating, "AI won't replace cybersecurity 'anytime soon.'" He emphasized that customers are increasingly recognizing the need for a more consistent and responsive security stack, which can be enhanced by AI technologies. The recent selloff in software stocks has been exacerbated by new AI tools capable of rapidly creating enterprise workflows and websites. Companies like Anthropic and OpenAI have introduced innovations that have left investors anxious about the long-term impact on business models. This year, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF has plummeted over 23%, while Palo Alto Networks' stock has fallen 11% so far, and 21% over the past year. In response to the evolving landscape, Palo Alto has been investing heavily in AI, unveiling a range of new tools in the last quarter. The company has also made significant acquisitions to enhance its cybersecurity offerings amid the rise of advanced AI technologies. Earlier this month, it finalized a $25 billion acquisition of identity security firm CyberArk and acquired AI observability platform Chronosphere in January. Additionally, the company announced plans to purchase Israeli cybersecurity startup Koi. Arora reassured investors, saying, "These investments are a direct response to the inflections we see taking shape in the market. While it’s still early, the initial feedback from our customers has been very encouraging. We believe we’re now entering the next phase of AI adoption."
