At the recent Reindustrialize Summit in Detroit, Palmer Luckey, the founder of defense technology firm Anduril, revealed plans to potentially produce American-made computers. This initiative aligns with efforts to modernize U.S. manufacturing, a topic Luckey has been passionate about for years. During his address, Luckey expressed optimism about Anduril's capability to spearhead this venture, stating, "There’s a chance that it’s going to be Anduril." He emphasized that the company has engaged with a variety of stakeholders essential for this project, including those involved in chip production, assembly, and manufacturing. However, Luckey acknowledged that Anduril is still in the exploratory phase and has not yet started manufacturing computers. He remarked, "There are some things Anduril has to do. There are other things we’d rather have other people do," indicating a preference for collaboration over direct involvement in computer production. The idea of American-made computers isn't entirely new. Prominent PC manufacturer Dell previously operated several U.S. manufacturing facilities but shifted its production overseas in 2009. Luckey's vision appears to be a step towards reviving domestic computer manufacturing. In addition to discussing computers, Luckey, who spoke virtually alongside a humanoid robot from Foundation, mentioned that Anduril would not develop its own humanoid robot but would seek partnerships with other companies where it makes practical sense. Since its inception in 2017, Anduril has focused on creating military hardware, including drones and AI-driven software like Lattice. The firm is also collaborating with Meta to develop advanced reality headsets and wearables for military applications, a partnership announced earlier this year. Although Luckey refrained from revealing a potential name for the computer, he teased that it would reflect a pro-American sentiment and carry a gambling reference, leaving the audience curious about his creative intentions.
