Trump praises Palantir with stock down 14% this week as Iran conflict drags on

In a recent post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Palantir Technologies, commending its advanced capabilities in military operations. His remarks come as the company's stock faces a significant decline, plunging nearly 15% this week. "Palantir Technologies (PLTR) has proven to have great war fighting capabilities and equipment," Trump stated, emphasizing the software's effectiveness in conflict scenarios. Despite the recent downturn, Palantir's stock had previously surged due to increased military activity in the Middle East, particularly after the U.S. initiated strikes against Iran in late February. Reports indicate that the military is leveraging Palantir's AI-driven Maven Smart System platform to enhance target identification in combat zones. CEO Alex Karp has long advocated for equipping the U.S. military with cutting-edge technology, even as he navigates complex political waters. While Karp has historically supported various political figures, including President Biden, he has maintained a strong alignment with defense initiatives. Palantir's contracts extend to key government agencies, including the Pentagon and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The company also collaborates with AI lab Anthropic, which has faced scrutiny from the Department of Defense over concerns related to autonomous weaponry and surveillance technology. Although Karp mentioned plans to phase out Anthropic's models, those changes have not yet materialized. Investor sentiment around Palantir has been volatile. Prominent short-seller Michael Burry has raised alarms about the stock, suggesting that Anthropic's involvement could be detrimental to Palantir’s prospects. In a now-deleted post, Burry claimed that Anthropic is “eating Palantir's lunch.” He reiterated his concerns in a Substack update following Trump's comments, indicating that while the stock may experience short-term fluctuations, he remains bearish on its long-term value, estimating it to be below $50 per share. Following the latest decline, Palantir's stock is currently trading around $127.40.
