Palantir is reportedly helping the IRS investigate financial crimes

For nearly ten years, Palantir Technologies has played a crucial role in assisting the IRS’s Criminal Investigations unit in tackling various financial crimes across the United States, according to a report by The Intercept. Since 2018, the IRS has invested $130 million in Palantir's advanced data analysis software, which is utilized to scrutinize financial records for investigative needs. This information came to light through public records that detail the contract between Palantir and the IRS, as uncovered by the nonprofit watchdog organization American Oversight. It has been known for some time that the IRS has been employing Palantir's tools to enhance and modernize their auditing processes. However, the full extent of the agency's reliance on Palantir's capabilities had not been disclosed until now. The software in question, known as the Lead and Case Analytics platform, is designed to collect and analyze data across various federal agencies. It has the capacity to identify intricate connections among millions of records and thousands of data points, excelling particularly in illustrating relationships and communications between individuals. Additionally, it was reported last summer that Palantir had been aiding the DOGE initiative, a program aimed at improving government efficiency that was initiated through an executive order by former President Trump. This initiative included a project focused on accessing IRS records. In light of these developments, American Oversight has taken legal action against the Trump administration, seeking public records concerning the use of Palantir's tools by multiple federal agencies, including the IRS. TechCrunch has reached out to Palantir for further insights and will update the article pending the company's response.
