Palantir cofounder says CEOs are pretending layoffs are about 'AI productivity' when they're not

In an era where layoffs seem to be rampant, Palantir's co-founder, Joe Lonsdale, is raising eyebrows over the narrative that these job cuts are driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. According to Lonsdale, many companies claiming to streamline operations under the guise of 'AI productivity' might not be entirely truthful. The layoff announcements from various companies, including Block, Atlassian, and Coinbase, appear strikingly similar. They often cite the need for more efficient teams, attributing the changes to gains in productivity from AI technologies. However, Lonsdale argues that these justifications are a smokescreen for companies that overextended themselves during the hiring boom of 2021 to 2023 and are now struggling to meet growth expectations. He expressed his concerns on social media platform X, stating, "Everyone who over-hired or lowered the bar too much... now pretends they're laying people off 'due to AI productivity.'" The post resonated widely, garnering support from notable figures in the venture capital arena, such as Marc Andreessen and Jon Chual, who pointed to companies like Meta and Square as prime examples of this trend. Critics, including Gannon McCollum from Elon Musk's xAI, have echoed Lonsdale's sentiment, suggesting that attributing layoffs to AI is more palatable than admitting to mismanagement. Lonsdale's commentary continues to spark discussions about the responsibility of leadership in addressing their operational failures. This skepticism over the AI narrative isn't new. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that many companies were 'AI-washing' their layoffs, shifting the blame to technology for decisions they would have made regardless. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block, acknowledged such claims, admitting that over-hiring during the pandemic had complicated matters, though he cautioned against oversimplifying the situation. Despite his critique of the layoff justifications, Lonsdale remains a strong advocate for AI. As a general partner at 8VC, he invests in several AI ventures, firmly believing in the potential of AI to enhance productivity across industries. Yet, he recognizes the complex motives that may lie beneath the surface of corporate decision-making regarding workforce reductions.
