In a significant move for app developers, Paddle and RevenueCat have announced a partnership aimed at providing an alternative to Apple's in-app purchase model. This collaboration comes in light of a recent change in U.S. App Store policies permitting developers to manage their own payment processes. The integration unveiled allows users to make purchases directly from developers’ applications, regardless of whether they are using web or mobile devices. Paddle will oversee web-specific transactions, addressing the complexities of tax and compliance, while RevenueCat will furnish developers with insights into subscription data and performance across both web and mobile platforms. This development is a direct result of a ruling by District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in the antitrust case brought by Epic Games against Apple. Although Apple emerged with a favorable verdict on the monopolistic claim, the court mandated that developers be allowed to link to external web payment options without incurring Apple’s commission fees. This new collaboration enables users to subscribe on one platform—be it web or mobile—and effortlessly access their subscriptions on all devices. RevenueCat’s dashboard will allow developers to monitor real-time analytics across web, iOS, and Android, streamlining the process. Several applications, like the running app Runna, already utilize services from both companies, enhancing their monetization strategies. Jimmy Fitzgerald, CEO of Paddle, emphasized the opportunity for subscription-based apps to boost revenue by tapping into the web, while also acknowledging the technical and operational hurdles that accompany this transition. RevenueCat co-founder and CEO Jacob Eiting praised the partnership, highlighting that it empowers developers to incorporate web payments alongside traditional app store transactions.
